UDrive -- User File Space| Attention: (1) starting May 2007 folders are being created for all users so that we can redirect the Desktop from the roaming profile to the UDrive; read here for more details. Users no longer need to enroll to get space. (2) starting July 2006 you should use dce.psu.edu\userid instead of win\userid when connecting. Support for Windows 95/98/ME is withdrawn. The "UDrive" is a central file service provide via Windows servers for lab and tech class users to save private files and share files with other users. The name "UDrive" comes from popular usage because the "share" is usually "mapped" as the drive letter "U", and we couldn't think of a better name.
This service was initiated in the 1990's primarily for users of CLC's labs and classrooms. Years later the PASS storage space was introduced and it has become more popular. The UDrive service has been retained for the convenience of existing users. You may use both, but more space is available via PASS.
The files in your "home" folder (e.g. U:\x\y\xyz123) and in folders under it cannot be accessed by other users unless you change permissions. However, the names of the files and folders in your home folder only, are visible to everyone. This makes sharing specific folders much easier.
If you don't want anyone to see the names of some files, then put them in a subfolder, such as U:\x\y\xyz123\data.
