Introduction:
Penn State has deployed Linux in select labs on campus to give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to work on an operating system that is quickly being adopted into business, industry, science, education, and government.
Linux has been deployed here at Penn State because of student demand, low cost of ownership, and being an educational institution, Penn State wants to facilitate students, faculty and staff with the latest technological advances in all aspects of Information Technology.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the most prevalent version of Linux in use today mostly in business and specialty fields, and has partnerships with Sun, Dell, HP, and IBM. We chose Red Hat because this is the most widely distributed Linux distribution, and the most likely version that students, faculty, and staff would encounter away from the labs and classrooms of Penn State.
